Proposition 50

Basic Election Information

California will have a statewide special election on Nov. 4, 2025. Voters will be asked to decide on Proposition 50.

What is Proposition 50?

Proposition 50 authorizes temporary changes to congressional district maps in response to Texas’ partisan redistricting.

Proposition 50 requires a temporary use of new congressional district maps through 2030. Directs the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to resume enacting congressional district maps in 2031. Establishes a policy supporting nonpartisan redistricting commissions nationwide.

Fiscal Impact: A one-time cost to counties of up to a few million dollars statewide to update election materials to reflect new congressional district maps.

Key Deadlines

  • Last day to register to vote (to receive mailed ballot) – Oct. 20, 2025
  • Vote-by-mail ballots mailed – Starting Oct. 6, 2025
  • Ballot drop-off locations and accessible mail voting begin – Oct. 7, 2025
  • Early in-person voting – Starting Oct. 25, 2025
  • Election Day – Nov. 4, 2025
    • Polls open 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM
